The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), facilitated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), has officially launched the first in a series of short, freely accessible mini-MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) designed to help people around the world confidently use climate data in their work and decision-making.
📘 What Mini-MOOC 1 Covers
Mini-MOOC 1 — Understanding Climate Data: From Analysis of the Past to Future Projections is the first of the series and introduces learners to:
- The foundations of climate data — what it is and how it is structured.
- How climate data is collected through observations.
- How models help us understand and simulate climate processes.
- The role of reanalysis in reconstructing past climate.
- How future climate projections are made and used.
This first course gives learners the confidence to find, interpret, and use climate information, even if they don’t have formal training in climate science.
The mini-MOOC 1 (actually now is MOOC) consists of 6 modules as follow:

💡 Who Should Take It
The mini-MOOCs are designed for a broad global audience. Instead of being limited to climate experts, these courses support:
- Professionals implementing climate-related policies or reporting on climate impacts.
- Employees of private companies needing to understand climate risk.
- Public sector staff working on climate adaptation plans.
- Students, academics, and researchers from other fields eager to enhance their data literacy.
Whether you’re involved in water management, energy planning, agriculture, health, or city design — learning how to work with climate data unlocks powerful insights for your projects.
📅 How It Works
The course is fully online and self-paced, meaning learners can progress at their own rhythm. It includes a mix of instructional modules, examples, and practical exercises, making the learning experience engaging and practical.
Registration is currently open through the ECMWF Learning platform, where learners can create a free account and enrol in this Climate Data course as well as future mini-MOOCs in the series. Each week from 23 February, a new module will be launched.
